Breakfast - A sweet affair
The day begins in France of course, with breakfast.
However, not at all like many non-French people believe. An extended breakfast with jam and lots of croissants? With crusty baguette on sunny terrace, the view of lavender fields and blue sky...? Far from it! What vacationers enjoy on their French vacation as "typically French" has very little to do with the breakfast culture of the French. Cheese, a selection of sausages and eggs for breakfast? That is absolutely un-French! The "ptit déj" (pronounced: ptit daaysch = breakfast) is very spartan. And above all one thing: sweet!
A café au lait and a "tartine", (a piece of baguette or toast) spread with a little butter and jam. Some also just dip a thick, hard breakfast cookie into the coffee. And that's about it. Not very romantic, is it?
Most kids eat a big bowl of cereal (cornflakes or similar) in the morning - with milk, often without.
Our neighbors don't take much time for breakfast during the week.
10 minutes usually have to be enough. Because the office and the eternally long school day are already waiting....Hush hush!!!
Well, I'm going to enjoy my coffee now...
